Rehabilitation is the science of healing tissues suffering from pain, dysfunction, or injury through the application of biomechanics, anatomy, physics, and physiology. The goal of rehabilitation is to promote the healing process as well as reduce or prevent the degeneration of tissues. This therapy results in stronger, healthier tissues that improve life.
Pets that benefit the most from rehabilitation are those recovering from orthopedic or spinal surgery and those suffering with neurologic disease, cancer, arthritis, muscle atrophy, or obesity.
Post surgical orthopedic patients suffering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, patellar luxation, femoral head osteotomy (FHO), or fracture may be able to return to activities much faster. Those patients with more long term diseases such as neurologic disease, cancer, arthritis, and obesity may enjoy and improved quality of life by becoming able to cope with every day activities like managing stairs or chasing a ball.
Each candidate for rehabilitation begins with a physical exam by a veterinarian and a consultation with a rehabilitation technician. An assessment of the injury or disease is made and the the appropriate rehabilitation regimen is implemented. Each treatment is customizable to the individual patient.
Procedures include hot and cold therapies, muscle and tendon stretches, strengthening exercises, underwater treadmill conditioning, and electrical stimulation of muscles. We offer our services to new clients as well as on a referral basis from your regular veterinarian. |
